As a palliative care doc, I am often surprised how little mention mortality gets in information given to patients. It doesn't have to doom and gloom, but some balance would be nice and help us all to be better prepared.Christian Sinclairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14685043408496367587noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6918105604270007470.post-12261395615671781802010-02-22T19:30:29.048-05:002010-02-22T19:30:29.048-05:00The function of a shaman was to cure or heal ailme...The function of a shaman was to cure or heal ailments AND guide the souls of the dead. They could not compartmentalize the way we do in our culture because they were INTEGRATED into their community of practice. There was no avoiding the failures of practice. For all our advancements, we have lost so much. We have lost a shared community response. I am so sorry for this slap of grief. We focus on life after death.

I understand why the patient advocacy organizations center their attention on hope. I'm sure it's what most people want/need at the time. But the question becomes, when do we start to look at the realistic option that they may not survive? And if they don't - what then? Who's there with a pamphlet then?

It's an emotional, yet political tight rope. I hope it changes some day.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11258532673780225577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6918105604270007470.post-64125723634033517472010-02-22T13:34:40.168-05:002010-02-22T13:34:40.168-05:00I hear ya. No one in that group wants to know either, not any more than the civilians do.

You think cancer sucks? Meet death.

But I'm hoping we can do something about this. Things are changing....

I'm so sorry. I'm thinking of you.

X

SupaSupa Dupa Freshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07659738264922395349noreply@blogger.com
